Ship’s Log 6.11

Never in all my Trekkie fantasies did I think I would one day say, with all sincerity, “Ship’s Log..” But more importantly, we survived our first day! Lessons learned: 1) William is an optimistic time gauger 2) doesn’t matter because you’ll stumble into a fun dinner party anyway 3) understanding electrical systems on a boat takes 3 reads of the manual by Mumsy and 1 read by cocky teen 4) I love gadgets and gear.

We got off without a hitch! Sweet Anne Blessing picked us up at Gibbes St and drove us to CYC. At this point, the boat was as ready as she was going to get. So we iced down the cooler and off we went.

Weather was great so we decided to run outside. Swells were slightly big -Meade and I decided to try out our new wrist bands. Lo and behold, they had not charged. This opened up the issue that the outlets were not working. Thus the manual reading. It’s all about systems piggybacking off one another and damn switches. (Don’t tell Dustin at the Hinckley yard I said that. He already thinks we’re lunatics.) Anyhoo, with a deep dive in the manual and one snide comment from Mason (that really did solve it, dammit), we were back in business, charging cords sticking out of outlets like Medusa’s locks (everything near dead at this point).

With all this busy work below, I was ready for less rocking. We all were, so Wm put us in the ICW at Litte River Inlet. We were greeted by a parade of jet skis. One fellow got grumpy with us for not going faster and providing more wake. Wm was on a conference call at that point so no fun for you, bud.

Made it to Wrightsville after seeing osprey carrying a baby shark and a bald eagle (GBA).

Devon Hanahan had reached out before trip to see if we could have dinner with them in Wrightsville. However, with Wm’s rose colored glasses, we were def going to make it to at least Morehead City. Guess where we had dinner? With Devon, Bill, and Bessie Hanahan’s fam and friend Russell! after it was very clear we would not make it past Wrightsville, they sweetly took us in and served some amazing fresh flounder. Such a fun time and interesting peeps.

Set up beds, tucked in for the night, and would call day 1 a success!

William's Boat Entry - the Backstory

So, I am a guest blogger and have been relegated to give some background on how this forced family fun came to pass. This is not the Cogswells’ first boat trip.   Twenty years ago to the month, I took a much smaller boat with no electronics, very little planning, ample Budweiser, and Toastchee crackers on a similar but slightly more aggressive trip north to the St. Lawrence Seaway.   From there, we went down and through the Great Lakes, into the Chicago Canal and Illinois River, down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, then cut through Florida’s Lake Okeechobee to the Atlantic before heading back north up the east coast back to Charleston.   It was a memorable trip as Lucile and I met on the first leg.   I had friends switching out along the way to do different sections. Chandler Collins had the first leg with me. She and I went to Sewanee together, and she grew up with Lucile. She introduced Lucile and me in New York where Lucile was living at th...

Return to Michigan

We return to Michigan to have a quick visit with the fam. Meade and I fly up Sunday and watch the final polo match of the season. Unfortunately, we miss my brother Mason’s earlier win against my father. There is much rejoicing from one and a bit of grumbling from the other. Moose Jaw Junction serves up another fine meal to celebrate. The next day, we enjoy the porch, some swimming, and catching up. We head to Chandler’s in Petoskey for dinner. Everyone is in good spirits, and Liz joins me for a late-night airport pickup. Mason and William are standing on the curb patiently (?) awaiting our arrival. Liz and Uncle Mason have to leave the next morning for Saratoga. We spend the day swimming and helping Dad with boat repairs. Mason and William pump out the water in the sailboat (the venerable Proud Mary) from a recent storm so go ahead and pump out the neighbor’s listing boat while they are at it. Picture hands on hips, superhero capes fluttering in the wind. Meade and Mason de...

Mason’s Boat Entry 6.25

Last night, mom wanted to go dancing and turned into a  [redacted] when   Dad, Meade, and I skipped off to change for dinner, leaving her clinging to the side of the boat, filling up the water tank with a hose. She would not stop [redacted]. We finally made it to dinner. We woke up this morning and made it to Rochester in 3 hours. Everyone was cheery enough. When we got there, we lounged and fished in the marina around the docks. It wasn’t too long before I caught a baby bass whose size was pretty disappointing. About 15 min later, I caught a nice 6 lb blue catfish. That was a lot more exciting. A drunk charter captain saw my fish and came over to chat for a while. Then, we headed off to an Italian joint for dinner, where we played an impression game on Meade’s phone. I did an amazing Yoda impression, Mom got Kermit, Meade had R2D2, and Dad got Stewey Griffin but did Cartman because he doesn’t watch either show.
